Striking non-teaching staff of the Fedral University of Technology, Owerri, acting under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities; the Non- Academic Staff Union and the National Association of Technologist Staff, have vowed to bring all activities at the institution to a halt.
The workers accused the university authorities of intimidating members of the unions involved in the ongoing nationwide strike.
The Joint Action Committee also alleged that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, FUTO chapter, had made efforts to sabotage the strike by allegedly colluding with the management of the institution to carry out functions they were not employed to do.
The Chairman of JAC, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, who addressed journalists on Monday outside the Senate building of the university, threatened to cut off electric supply to the student’s hostels and lecture theatres, as well as to withdraw all security personnel employed by the university.
Nwokoma said the unions had demanded to know how members of the Academic Staff Union got N18bn out of the N23bn released by the Federal Government for the payment of earned allowances for all the staff of the Federal Universities, while the three unions got only N4bn.
He said, “If the Federal Government said the money was for the payment of earned allowances, then we should be paid ours. This is because our sister union, ASUU, has hijacked the payment with the assistance of the permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education and I can tell you that we are not going to back down from the strike until we got our own earned allowances which is N66bn”.
