COURSE TITLE:        THEORIES AND PRACTICE OF EARLY CHILDHOOD  EDUCATION Time allowed:         2hrs

 

 

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question 1 which is compulsory and any other two questions.

 

1 a) Imagine that  you are a teacher in nursery school. One child in the school throws a tantrum whenever he wants to get his way. You have called her parents for a discussion. When you ask them as to how they deal with the child’s behaviour, they replied “oh! when he does something like that, we do as he wants. It is so much simpler to agree with him. At least there is peace after that”. How would you respond to the parents’ statement. 10 marks

  1. b) Give three (3) distinctions between growth and development. 6 marks c) Explain two (2) factors influencing growth and developmen 6 marks d) Explain the principle of cephalo-caudal development. 4 marks
  2. e) Explain the principle of proximo-distal developmen 4 marks

 

2 Briefly describe to a layman the basic tenets of psychosocial theory of child development. 20 marks

 

3 a) Mention four (4) ways in which knowledge of cognitive development inform what learning experiences to include for children in early childhood years? 12 marks

  1. b) Briefly discuss two merits and two demerits of Montessori method. 8 marks

4 a) Describe eight specific behaviours (2 per stage) that  mark language development as children develop from infancy stage to age eight years old. 8 marks
