1(a) Define carbohydrates (2marks)

(b) Mention five importance of carbohydrates (5marks)

(c)  Carbohydrates  are  macromolecules  with  diverse  characteristics.  Classify  carbohydrates based on four mentioned characteristics (10½marks)

 

 

 

2 i.Write short notes on the following. Marks shall be given for correctly represented structures a.   Ketose (5marks)

  1. Non -reducing sugars(5marks)
  2. c. Sugar Alcohols

ii Mention two forms in which the cyclic structures of sugars can occur and make a skeletal representation of any(2½marks)

 

3(a).Describe the formation of glycosides with an example (5½marks) (b).Write on four reactions of carbohydrates (12marks)

 

  1. (a) Write briefly on stereoisomers(3½marks)

(b)Using structures only differentiate between the α and β anomers of D-glucose (6marks) (c ) Classify the following monosaccharide based on the number of carbon atoms present Erythrose, Arabinose, Fructose, Sedoheptulose,  Galactose,  Ribose, Mannoheptulose ,Threose Under the following headings
