CHM 314:                              Environmental Chemistry

INSTRUCTION:                   Answer any four Questions

 

Question one

  1. a) i) Explain with appropriate balanced chemical equation, the released of carbondioxide into the atmosphere by decay of plants and animals.  (41/2 marks )

 

  1. ii) Discuss using the processes involved in water cycle, the movement of water through and around the planet. (6 ½ marks)

 

b) i)When is a substance termed “Air pollutant” ( 4 marks)
  ii) Justify the inclusion of particulates as air pollutants. (2 ½ marks)

 

Question two

 

  1. a) Differentiate between the Thermosphere and the Exosphere  ( 7 marks)

 

  1. b) Write briefly on the significance of the ozone layer and its destruction by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCS) . write an appropriate chemical equation for the destruction of ozone layer by  (CFCS) .                                                                                           (10 ½ marks)

 

 

Question three

 

  1. a) Giving reason(s) for your answer, classify the spill of crude oil on water as a contaminant or pollu  (5 ½ marks)

 

  1. b) i Distinguish between DO and BOD ( 5 marks)

 

 

ii Explain briefly the principle of the determination of DO by the Winkler Iodometric method .                                                                                                         ( 7 marks)

Question four

  2. ii) Distinguish between primary treatment, secondary treatment and tertiary treatment
