NANS Urges FG To Increase Funding For Education Sector

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the federal government to increase funding for the nation education sector, saying education remains the bedrock of any nation that wishes to advance forward.

A statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday, said the position was taking after an on-the-spot campus assessment tour to Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) led by NANS, PRO, Comrade Odebunmi Idowu to the university.

Odebunmi noted that no nation can develop without paying adequate attention to its education, adding that as a nation, Nigeria must begin to give priority to its education sector.

He, however, commended the vice chancellor, FUOYE, Prof. Kayode Soremekun for the massive infrastructural development on-going at the institution. He averred that the federal government needs to pay adequate attention to how it funds the sector.

Odebunmi lamented that the sector over the years have been poorly funded and in some cases funds meant for the sector is misappropriated by officials of government, “this has to stop.’ He said: “We cannot afford to continue to do the same thing and expect a different result.

No nation can progress with such mindset. We need to put efforts together to move the nation’s education sector forward. “If all administrators of our universities follow the steps of Prof. Soremekun, our universities would be a reference point in Africa and globally.

“We encourage other VCs to copy the good development strides going on at FUOYE and ensure they replicate same at their institutions.

“Nigeria can rise to world acclaim in the comity of developed nations if we give education the needed attention beginning from our citadels of l Meanwhile, NANS  has urged the Federal government to arrest and prosecute all those involved in the recent killings  in Benue, Taraba , Plateau and some other states..

The NANS President, Comrade Chinonso Obasi  made the position of the association known to Journalists at the 74th Pre-Convention Senate meeting of the association held at the weekend in Minna. “Nigerian students wholeheartedly condemn the unabated ,  mindless killings ongoing in some states and call for restraint.

The Herdsmen /farmers clash  in Benue,  Taraba, Plateau and some other Southern states should be resisted and checked by all men of good conscience.

“It is a sad taste of hatred by brothers against brothers. The Federal government should come  clear in defense of the people and ensure the arrest and prosecution of masterminds. “President Muhammadu Buhari should swiftly deploy our troops to protect the victims.

We therefore call on the Governor Dave Umahi led Committee proposed to meet Miyetti Allah to speedily and conscientiously do justice to the incessant clashes and assure him of Nigerian students support and prayers” he added.

The NANS President frowned at ‘politicization of the matter and plead for sense of brotherliness amongst contending groups for peace  and unity of the nation’.
